Creating a personal brand is for sure, a daunting, back breaking task. Perhaps, the easiest way to get lost in the process is when you do not know where to start. Even Oprah Winfrey began by following through diligently on a small local show before defining her voice into one of the most influential personal brands in the world.
It’s highly propitious to stand out when applying for a job or starting your own company. A personal brand works for (almost) everyone. So here are some golden rules for creating an engaging, unique, and vision oriented personal brand.
Have a focus.
It’s no news that the narrower and more focused your brand is, the easier it is for people to store your memories in their brains. And when it comes time to hire a new service provider or a new employee, your well planned brand will be what they remember.
According to Cooper Harris, founder and CEO of Klickly, “Too many people are unfocused when it comes to press and coverage, trying to be “everything to everyone. Decide what your key message is and stick to it. Keep your message and content consistent to one niche topic to become memorable within a targeted community. The key here is to create a positive impact.
Jacob Shwirtz, head of social partnerships at WeWork, opined that after you’ve developed your personal brand for a while, there are generally two ways to continue to build your brand — hop over others, burning bridges in the process or steadily grow a community who love your brand.
Be genuine.
Genuineness and authenticity is one way to build a personal brand. That translates to integrity, dignity and loyalty; all three are a must have.
There’s an easy way to have an original personal brand — and that is to be genuine and authentic. Millennial influencer and head of marketing at Popular Demand, Monica Lin, believes that “People can see right through a disingenuous act.” If a brand is a copycat, the audience will recognize this sooner or later and they will shun that brand or call out the perpetrator for it.
Be genuine. It is a step in the right direction and will make it much easier to manage your personal brand everyday. Your personal brand should be an easy daily filter that you create content for both online and offline and reach out to your audience with.
Tell a story.
If your personal brand isn’t telling a story, sharing with your community, you’ve already lost half of your potential audience. According to Allen Gannett, chief strategy officer at Skyword and author of The Creative Curve explains it best: “The most effective personal branding strategy these days is to build a true narrative.” Shouting about your brand into the social media void is highly ineffective so do well to create a story around your brand that your audience can engage with.
Branding is way underrated. One of the best ways to tell that story is through written content or video. Don’t sleep on it.
